Paper chair challenge in S.T.E.M!

We are learning to problem solve as a team. We had to make a chair out of paper and tape. The chair had to be at least 10 cm. The chair had to support a soft toy. We worked together really well and we worked together to create our chair/stool even though it cold not hold a soft toy. We needed to work on the shapes because we only used cylinders and one square. We could of use triangles and rectangles but we didn't use them. Have you made a paper chair before?

There is a photo of our paper chair underneath this text.

Life-cycle of a Tuatara

We have been learning to write an explanation about animal life-cycle. We had to include a title, introduction, subtitles, conclusion, technical language, factual information, a topic and stages. We also learnt about pandas and frogs but I chose Tuataras. It went well because when I had my plan done I could just look at it and then write it down on the document. My next step is to maybe think about detail. What do you like about Tuataras? Have you written a life-cycle before?

Here is my writing on the life-cycle of a Tuatara.
The life-cycle of a Tuatara!

Today I am going to tell you about the life-cycle of a Tuatara!

Stage one: the egg.

A female Tuatara lay 10 to 19 eggs in a deep underground burrow.
A Tuataras eggs are soft and leathery.
An egg with a female inside is warm and an egg with a male inside is cold.

Stage two: the hatchling

A baby hatchling will come out of the egg. The hatchlings are left to defend themselves by their mother.
[It's kind of mean.] A hatchling has 3 eyes for some weird reason. [It is cool though.]

Stage three: the juvenile.

Juvenile Tuataras don't have babies or mate yet.
Eventually the juvenile Tuatara grow scales over their 3rd eye.
For the first 15 years of its life a Tuatara is called a juvenile.

Stage four: the adult.

Adult Tuataras are about 45 to 60 centimeters long.
A Tuatara has been alive before the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Tuataras have been alive for almost 200 million years. Tuataras lay eggs every 3 to 4 years.

What did you learn about Tuataras? Do you have one as a pet? Do you even like Tuataras?

Saving Sand Dunes

We are learning about sand dunes and how to save them. We went down onto the sand to learn to be good stewards of the sand. The sand dunes protect us from the wind and the waves. The person that taught us about the plants and animals was named Cecilia.

The plants on the sand dunes are the ice plant, marran grass, pingao and the purple ground sea. The animals that live in the sand are the katipo, sand hopper and the skink. We also made mini sand dunes and decorated them with sticks and stuff. My group got about 3 beetles in our sand dune! After we built the sand dunes the groups did a show and tell and talked about the sand dunes. The sand dune that my group made had a parking lot, a beetle arena, some holes for the beetles to live in and our things to protect the sand dune.

Fox and Kalem drawing

Me and Kalem did a instruction manual on how to draw things. I found easy telling the instructions because my instruction was telling Kalem how to draw my smiley face. [showed later in photo.] The hard part was drawing because i`m bad at drawing and Kalems one was really hard. [Showed later in photo.] It`s important to write clear instructions because then the person that was following your instructions will know when, where, how and why those instructions are there. Here is a photo of me holding my drawing

Reflection 1

we have been learning to write a narrative, to write a narrative you need a title, problem, intro, solution and a ending. I enjoyed writing the narrative because its fun to make twists and turns in your writing. I found the planning challenging because you have lots of ideas in your head and you don`t know what idea to use. My next step is to make my ending more interesting by adding more descriptive words. My question for you is what do you like about story writing?

Enjoy my presentation of the great escape!!

I learnt that polar bears have black skin, that their fur is clear and that trees are in the arctic! Cool, right? I want to know more about the trees and how they grow in a harsh place. I really enjoyed going because the museum has lots of cool things that are rare like dinosaur skeletons and geodes! What do you know about museums?

What statistics, bar graph, tally chart and pictogram are!

Hi, my name is Fox and Room 4 has been learning about statistics, bar graphs, tally charts and pictograms! I will now tell you what statistics is! Statistics is when you gather information. Now I will tell you what a bar graph is and what you need to make one! A bar graph is a type of graph!DUH!!!!! You will need a X and Y access.  The Y access is for putting the numbers on. Make sure you don't put the numbers too far apart! .The X access is for putting the options. You will have to write the options going downwards. You will need a question at the top. Make sure you use the options. They are the 2nd most important thing you need to make a bar graph. Also colour in the options amounts. Don't forget the statements. Now I will tell you what a tally chart is!!! A tally chart is similar to a pictogram, but there are a few differences. A tally chart is something you record on. Now I will tell you how to make one. You will need the options, the tally marks. You do four tally marks close together, then do a fifth line going across the other four lines. You need a box under each option. That is where you draw the tally marks. That is how you make one!! Now I will tell you what a pictogram is! A pictogram is a type of graph!!!!! Now I shall tell you what you need to make one!! You need the options, a Y access, some X accesses going from the top to the bottom going across, the pictures for the amount of votes. That is how you make one!!! I really enjoyed learning about the pictogram because I never knew it existed!! I found gathering the information really challenging because I had to walk around a lot. I want to learn more about the three graphs!!!! How do you make the graphs????!? Huh? Oh. Okay!!!!! I will show you what they look like now!!! Sorry I can not put the bar graph.
